Here we look at the films made by a morally confounded generation: the innocents who spent their infancies and early childhoods growing up in Nazi Germany. As free and bold as these films are, there is next to nothing that conceals the rage and alienation of a generation of Germans not necessarily responsible for their homeland's atrocities, but whose parents and elders are. These filmmakers have inherited a wretched share, and their films battle with all manner of topics—from their ethnocultural orphanhood to the hubris and insanity of European imperialism, with the addition of a hard truth: that fascism, racism, and antisemitism remained alive and well in Germany long after the fall of the Third Reich.
This issue has been updated since its first edition with the replacement of one film and the addition of another. Among the makers of these six films are:
‣ Rainer Werner FASSBINDER
‣ Werner HERZOG
‣ Ulrike OTTINGER
‣ Wim WENDERS
